A kipe is a wicker basket that was used right up until the 20th century as an aid to be able to carry heavy burdens on the back. In the steep hills of the western coast of Norway, it was a good help that it could be hung on the horse's back. Traditionally, it was used to transport hay, potatoes, firewood, fertilizer and fish.
