Havrå is a farm on the south side of Osterøy, and one of the best preserved and most distinctive Norwegian cluster farms. There have been dwellings and farms here since the Early Bronze Age. At Havråtunet, the houses lie together in rows with cobbled streets between them, and are the center of a cultural landscape. Its land parcels have not been consolidated, and it was a so-called “spade farm”. The farmland is managed according to a plan to restore and operate five different areas, including infields and outfields. The farm was preserved in 1998, as the first cultural environment in Norway, and is a unique memory of farm management, building customs and working life on the many western gardens.
The book is written by Brita Gjerdåker Skre, who has followed working life in Havrå since 1949 and has unique knowledge of the farm, the people and the development in Havrå. The book is richly illustrated with old and new photos and many maps of visible and invisible cultural heritage.
