This pattern is inspired by pattern traditions from Western Norway. "Stolpetrøyer" are sweaters with a vertical stripe pattern traditionally knit in the Nordfjord region, and in Fana in Bergen we find the well-known Fana sweaters ("fanatrøyer") with simple horizontal stripes.
The knitwear factory in Salhus also produced sweaters with simple striped colourwork motifs, and the motif and color palette in these mittens are inspired by these traditions. The name Bergenhus is now mostly used to describe the central parts of Bergen, but Bergenhus county has historically featured several regions in Western Norway. It was also among the name suggestions when Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane merged into one county in 2020.

The pattern is written in several sizes that can be adapted to suit different hand sizes. For the large child / small woman's size, eg, you may choose to follow the thumb chart for this size, or use the woman's size thumb chart. For men's sizes, you can choose to knit a long or short version, with a short or long thumb for both sizes. It is also easy to adjust the width of the mitten by adding more pattern rows on the sides, if needed.
