The official name for the sheep is Old Norse sheep (Latin: Ovis brachyura Borealis) and they are also called Stone Age sheep, Viking sheep and outdoor sheep. The wild sheep on Ytre Lygra go outside all year and graze in the coastal heaths. Here you will find grass and herbs in the summer, while the winter green heather is the main food in the winter.
The wool of the wild sheep is two-parted with fine bottom wool and coarser top wool. The yarn is thick and robust, but still soft. Finished garments become softer after washing. The yarn is very suitable for outerwear, mittens and socks. Wool from wild sheep is known to be relatively water resistant and very warm.
